Patrons: Chris Haynes, Gene Dankbar, Jeff Haynes
Day 6 truly separated the men/women from the boys/girls
leaving only three to venture forth to the recently SARS cleared city of Toronto. Following the Detroit game the previous night one car load departed for Northern Maine for wedding preparations and a second returned to Columbus for work and school. Early on the morning of the sixth day, one patron was escorted to the Detroit airport where he caught a plane back to Massachusetts. So with passpor
t in hand and a strong reserve of antibodies, the three remaining travelers made their way to Toronto. The day was hot and visibility was slightly obscured by a low lying haze but otherwise it was another good day for baseball. Arriving relatively early, the three had time to go to the top of the CN Tower overlooking the SkyDome and Lake Ontario. The tower features a glass floor where
brave souls (only those weighing less than a hippo) can venture onto for a view 1,122 feet straight down.
The SkyDome was designed with the premise that “size matters” and with a capacity of over 50,000 easily accommodated the 21,588 in
attendance. The stadium features a Jumbotron from which fans can view lineups, vital stats, replays and occasionally themselves (see graphic of Jumbotron from a distance and then close up with arrow - that's the side of my head under the arm of the Blue Jay Mascot!!). It is 33 feet high and 115 feet wide – the largest in the world. The game played in the SkyDome is a variation of baseball practiced in Minnesota, Montreal, and Philadelphia that features “turf” whose similarity to grass ends with the color.
Oh yeah, one last thing, despite Gene's feelings to the contrary, Mike Bordick is, in fact, a grad of the fine baseball program at the University of Maine.
